Have you ever taken a sip of a favorite aperitif and wished you could describe its subtle flavors with a bit more precision than, “it’s really good?” Well, Park City-based Alpine Distilling (7132 Silver Creek Rd) may have the solution you’ve been looking for. In addition to crafting unique whiskeys and spirits, the distillery is also offering new experiential events, dubbed the Aroma Game and Foundations of Flavor, to help guests develop greater sensory awareness, specifically smell and taste.
During the two-hour Foundation of Flavor program, you first are introduced to a number of different aromatic stimulants so you can begin to explore and discuss the characteristics of distillates. Once you’ve sufficiently warmed up your olfactory senses, while receiving a bit of insight into how these smells change the tasting experience, you’ll get to put your skills to the test on actual spirits. Essentially, it boils down to a tasting with a lot of interesting information you may never have considered sipping your favorite whiskey.
The Aroma Game is a one-hour event that has guests guessing the aromatic notes to describe Alpine’s award-winning spirits. It’s a matching game of sorts. First you’ll have the chance to identify aromas (peach, smoke, vanilla, wood, etc.) and compare results with other participants. Then when you have your nose tuned in, you’ll try out your new skills on the spirits. At the end of the event, you’ll also be able to “build” your own spirits profile based on the aromas you enjoy best so you know exactly what to look for the next time you’re in the liquor store. Alpine Distilling specifically collaborated on the creation of this unique experience with the prestigious Aroma Academy of Scotland.
“In addition to fostering an elevated appreciation for distilled spirits, these tasting events are designed to be both educational and fun regardless of the level of knowledge participants have coming into them,” explains Alpine Distilling’s Founder and Distiller Rob Sergent. “It’s a unique activity for corporate group team building and a diversion for leisure travelers seeking an off-slope or après ski experience with a flavor and aroma adventure.”
Space for each Aroma Game Tasting is limited to sixteen participants to ensure a personalized experience for guest. Several sessions are being offered in December, so head over to Alpine Distilling’s website to get in on the action. If you love the experience, you can even take an Aroma Academy Game Kit (for whiskey, wine, or gin) home as a souvenir. We’ll raise a glass to that!

Preserve Liqueur is the spirit that started the Alpine portfolio. Sitting on our back deck, which happens to be on the preserve, and watching the sun setting over the Uinta Mountains I challenged myself to turn those brilliant colors in to flavors. The outline of the mountains became the black tea, the sun cast a color not red, not orange but something beautifully in between – that became blood orange. For the bright red around the blood orange we use raspberry and for the fading yellow light we use lemon balm. We finish with ginger and use a Kosher, 100% corn base for the spirit.
We enjoy Preserve in various ways. Anytime you’d use Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Chambord, St. Germain or other liqueurs try Preserve and see what the depth of flavor brings out in your cocktail. I love simple cocktails and enjoy Preserve with Gin, Tequila and Vodka in a simple 75/25 ratio. With Tequila and lime it makes a delicious Preservarita which has been very popular locally. Mixologists at two Park City, Utah bars have answered their calling to create eclipse-inspired cocktails. They will have viewing parties on their fabulous decks and will be serving these drinks accompanied by lunch specials beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 21. Park City is forecast to have 91% totality, so avoid the mayhem on the roads and enjoy the event in comfort and style at the 91 Percenter Club celebrations.

Savor the Flavor of Alpine Distilling! Historic Park City’s culinary extravaganza is a festive night of local cuisine and al fresco dining that ushers in the summer season. Thousands attend the annual Savor the Summit event that consists of restaurants serving dinner on beautifully decorated tables that line the middle of picturesque Main Street.

Did you know Alpine Distilling has a package license? In Utah, that means we are able to sell products from our distillery location without them having to be available at the State Liquor Stores. We are pleased to announce that our Traveler’s Rest single malt whiskey products – 88 proof and barrel proof are now available at the distillery. It’s been a treat to see Park City locals coming in to be among the first to enjoy these premium spirits.
It’s even the spirit of choice for the Park City Curling Club! And we had the opportunity to meet with national media hosted by Ski Utah last week who were each able to take home a bottle of Traveler’s Rest. They were visiting our charming town to report on their apres ski experiences.
